Terms of service

“We” and “us” mean Donor Catalyst, which operates this site. “You” means the person using it. By using the site you accept these terms.

Every US nonprofit's own Form 990 financial measures, mission profile, peer-segment name and size, website crawl facts, and a count of funders who have given to it are free to read, without an account. We intend to keep them that way: they are public record, and charging for an organization's own filed numbers is not a business we want to be in.

• A subscription costs $29 per month or $290 per year, charged through Stripe, and renews automatically until you cancel.
• One subscription covers every organization in the dataset. It is for one person; it is not a shared team licence.
• You can cancel at any time from Manage billing in your dashboard, which opens Stripe's billing portal. Cancelling stops future charges and your access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for. We do not prorate refunds for a partial period, but if you cancel soon after being charged and have not used the premium features, email us and we will refund you.
• If a payment fails, Stripe retries it over the following days. If it ultimately fails, the subscription ends and premium features stop; nothing you saved is deleted.
• We may change prices, but not for an existing subscription mid-term. Existing subscribers get notice before a change takes effect at their next renewal.

Website evaluations are metered — a subscription includes a set number each month, shown in your dashboard, resetting on the 1st. Report views and searches are rate-limited to make bulk scraping expensive. The ceilings are set well above normal research use; if you hit one doing something legitimate, tell us and we will raise it rather than leave you throttled.

Use what you find here for your organization's research, fundraising, planning and board reporting, including quoting figures in your own documents. We would appreciate a mention of the source, but we do not require one.

Please do not:

• Scrape, crawl, or bulk-download the site, or use automated tools to extract data at scale.
• Redistribute or resell the dataset, or build a competing product out of it.
• Share your sign-in so several people can use one subscription.
• Try to get at data your subscription does not cover, or at other users' accounts.

The underlying IRS filings are public records and belong to nobody. Our compilation of them — the matching, classification, peer segmentation, crawl results and comparisons built on top — is ours.

Claiming records that you speak for an organization, and is free and separate from any subscription. Claims are reviewed by a person, and we may decline or later revoke one. Do not claim an organization you do not represent.

We take accuracy seriously and the product is built to state its own limits: every comparison names the group behind it, unreported values render as a dash rather than as zero, and we distinguish throughout between something we looked for and did not find and something we have not looked at yet.

Even so, please understand:

• Filings are reproduced as filed. If an organization filed something wrong, we show what they filed.
• Data arrives on the IRS's schedule, so recent years are incomplete for months after they end.
• Funder matching is done by name and address and can both miss real grants and, occasionally, mismatch.
• Website and technology detection reflects one crawl at one moment, and roughly two thirds of the cohort has not been crawled at all.
• Peer segments and classifications are produced by automated systems and are approximations.

So: the service is provided as-is. It is a research tool, not financial, legal, tax, or investment advice, and it is not a substitute for due diligence. Do not make a grant, a hire, an investment, or any other consequential decision on the strength of a figure here without confirming it against the filing itself — which we cite on every report so that you can.

We aim to keep the site up, but we do not promise uninterrupted service and we may take it down for maintenance. We may change or remove features; where a change materially reduces what a subscription includes, we will tell subscribers.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, for lost income or lost grants, or for decisions taken on the basis of what you read here. Where we are liable, our total liability is capped at what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

You may stop using the service and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, in particular the scraping and sharing restrictions above. If we close a paid account other than for a breach, we will refund the unused portion.

We may update these terms; the date at the top shows when they last changed, and we will notify subscribers of material changes. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States.
